Hi world! My name is Alexandra Intriago and I live in Miami, Florida, but I like to call home anywhere I’m with my family and friends. I attend an all-girls school called Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, where I am involved in Key Club, the National French Honor Society, and the National Honor Society. In my free time, I volunteer at an after-school program for under-resourced children called the Barnyard. Here, I tutor boys and girls between the ages of 5-11 and am able to practice my passion for helping disadvantaged children reach their full potential.
I found out about Girl Up after attending a volleyball tournament in Colorado. When I learned that girls just like me in Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi, and Guatemala are at a disadvantage when it comes to their education, health, and safety, I set my mind to changing their fate and helping them be the next generation of leaders. With this in mind, I started my own club at my school in the tenth grade. Since I go to an all-girls school, the message of women’s empowerment was clear and powerful to students, faculty, and even other local businesses in Miami. Throughout my sophomore and junior year, the Carrollton Girl Up club has raised money and awareness through fundraisers such as a silent auction, a screening of “Girl Rising”, a yoga fundraiser, and a spinning fundraiser.
Not only have the fundraisers been extremely fun, active, and engaging, but they have helped me to connect with other people in my community and district who share similar interests, such as education for all, global awareness, and the belief that girls are the key to a prosperous future.
I am beyond excited to be a Teen Advisor this year and cannot wait to learn from others and their experiences. My hope is to use this awesome position to do even more with Girl Up through fundraisers, advocacy, and important awareness! I am looking forward to hearing and learning from girls all around the world so that we can be the voice of the future!
