Alexis Kallen

Hello, everyone! My name is Alexis, and I am currently a 17-year-old senior at Adolfo Camarillo High School in Camarillo, California.

I’ve always had a passion for raising my voice on political issues, which is why I am active in the Junior State of America, where I serve as the head of the state debate department and write for the state newspaper. I have won numerous awards for speaking on topics ranging from social issues to foreign policy legislation, like the Girls Count Act of 2013.

I have also established a Youth Advisory Board with my local Congresswoman, Julia Brownley, so that the youth in my district may voice their opinions directly to their congressional representative.

In the summer of 2011, I fundraised my way to an extended mission trip to Nueva Jerusalen, Peru, which is a small community on the outskirts of Lima. While there, I utilized my knowledge of Spanish to speak to families about nonviolence in the home and the importance of health and valuing oneself. Shortly after, I ventured to Tecate, Mexico to build houses for families in need.

At school I am the captain of the Speech and Debate team, president of the National Honor Society, and participate in student government. I enjoy spending days off from school volunteering at my grandmother’s high school for special needs students.  In my free time, I enjoy playing community soccer, swimming in the ocean, hiking, playing with my dog, going to local concerts, and hanging out with friends.

I am beyond excited to work with the Girl Up team this year, as well as meeting some amazing people along the way and listening to their stories.
