Hello Girl Up! My name is Ali Cohen and I am a Senior at Chandler Preparatory Academy for the 2018-2019 school year.
I first got involved with Girl Up in my Sophomore year when I started a club at my school. In the past two years our club has grown to over 30 members, fundraised over $1000 dollars, and collected over 4,000 tampons and pads for homeless women in Phoenix. At the beginning of my junior year I saw the potential for expansion in the state of Arizona, so I helped start the Arizona Coalition. Thus far, we’ve lobbied Jeff Flake’s office, held a political advocacy boot camp, and recruited many new clubs.
Outside of Girl Up I’m an avid volleyball player and speech and debater. As a debater I’ve had a lot of local and national success. I’ve been named a state champion 3 times and I’ve reached the final of the Harvard national tournament in Congressional Debate. I was also selected to represent the United States in an international Speech contest in London. Besides feminism and debate, some of my passions include civic engagement, environmental sustainability, and education!
I’m incredibly excited to be a Teen Advisor for this school year. I’m looking forward to spreading Girl Up’s “by girls for girls” movement. I hope to spend the next year empowering girls to make change in their communities.
In my free time you can catch me listening to podcasts, hanging out with my dog, Jerry, or binge watching Black Mirror!
