Hi! I’m Angelica Almonte. I am a rising junior at Lynbrook Senior High School in Long Island, New York. I am also thrilled to be serving as a 2017-18 Girl Up Teen Advisor!
I am extremely passionate about gender equality, advocacy, and the importance of education. I first heard about Girl Up when I was researching to first start a club in my school with Michelle Obama’s Let Girl’s Learn initiative. I immediately fell in love with Girl Up’s mission to better the lives and futures of adolescent girls all over the world.
I am fortunate to have been born into a supportive family that values education. My Dominican born grandparents were only able to obtain an elementary level education. Education is something I have never taken for granted. This is why I believe that every girl deserves a full education in order to prosper and live a better life. A girl with an education has the power to change the world.
Aside from my passion for gender equality, I enjoy and participate in an array of extra-curricular activities. I am a Varsity Cross Country runner in the fall and Captain of my Junior Varsity lacrosse team. I am also the Student Government Secretary and was Class President my freshmen year of high school. I am an active member of my school’s chapter of National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society. I am Business Manager and contributor to my school’s renowned newspaper, Horizon. I am also a member of SADD Club.
I look forward to serving in this years class of Teen Advisors. Thank you Girl Up for this amazing opportunity!
