Hi! My name is Anna McGuire, and I am 13 years old. I live in Cabin John, Maryland and attend Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland.
I have a younger brother and sister, Jack and Grace, who are 10-year-old fraternal twins. I also have a dog, Daisy and a chinchilla, Kiwi! In my free time, I love playing sports, baking and reading books. I also love to travel; I have recently been to Japan and Canada, and every year my family travels to Honolulu, Hawaii, where my mother grew up. My favorite movie is “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. I love to eat sushi! (In fact, I love to eat almost anything!)
In 2011, I went to my first Girl Up event and, shortly after, I founded a chapter at my middle school. I had previously raised money to purchase sewing machines for a non-profit organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Girl Up was the perfect organization to help me to continue my interest in helping people in other countries and learn more about human rights and advocacy to make a difference for other girls around the world.
In the past year, our Girl Up club has held multiple successful fundraisers, including a bake sale and Girl Up information booth at our school’s anniversary celebration. I also have spoken at a +SocialGood event on Girl Up’s behalf, attended an event at the World Bank and lobbied at my local Congressman’s office on child marriage legislation. Continuing a personal fundraising theme, this year our club also was able to raise funds for sewing machines for a women’s collective in Morocco.
I am so excited to become a Teen Advisor because I think that the experience will position me to connect with tons of other girls across the globe. I am eager to be part of the Girl Up movement and to spread the message about the importance of girls.
