Annabelle Lee

Hey there! My name is Annabelle Lee, and I am absolutely thrilled to serve as a 2016-2017 Teen Advisor!

I’m 16 years old and currently live in Chicago, where I attend Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. Two of my greatest passions include eliminating gender inequality and STEM, which are reflected in my extracurricular involvement at school! At Whitney Young, I am the co-founder and co-president of Girl Up and Girls Who Code (a national organization aimed at elevating women in computer science). These clubs have not only given me the opportunity to develop leadership skills but also the chance to meet and bond with other girls who share similar interests.

Aside from these two fields of interest, I absolutely love the visual and performing arts. I am the principal oboist of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra’s concert orchestra and recipient of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for personal memoir writing and drawing. In my free time, I love to listen to the orchestral works of Stravinsky, Debussy, and Ravel (just to name a few…) and stroll through new galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago with my friends.

While I take great pride in being a Chicagoan, Chicago is not the only place I call home…I’ve also lived in New Jersey, Arizona, Wisconsin, and overseas in Shanghai, China. In my time living overseas, I attended an international school along with students of numerous cultural backgrounds.I consider this experience to be what initially sparked my interest in the global community, as having friends of numerous origins fostered a celebration of both diversity and unity. I gradually learned that being an involved global citizen meant listening to the stories and experiences of all types of people and speaking up for those without voices.

These are the underlying principles that attracted me to Girl Up’s mission and what I think makes this campaign so unique. With this position, I am so excited to have the opportunity to affect change on the behalf of adolescent girls on a broader level!
