Hello! My name is Aya Alagha and I am 17 years old. I am originally from Syria, but I moved to the United States in 2017 when I earned a scholarship to complete the International Baccalaureate Program. I am thrilled to get involved with Girl Up and make a difference in the field of women’s rights.
Although my parents are very supportive of me and believe in girl power, growing up in Syria with all the societal and cultural restrictions made it hard for me to be and to express myself. This only made me grow more aware and interested in gender equality and women empowerment. Becoming a Teen Advisor with Girl Up will help me maximize my impact and level it up to a global scale. Advocating for women’s rights will help me take an active role in changing the mindset about feminism and will enable me to help girls from around the world, who are undergoing situations similar to mine, gain better access to greater opportunities.
In addition to gender equality, I consider the global refugee crisis as a humanitarian emergency that requires an immediate international response. I aspire to become a global citizen and increase the awareness regarding the importance of education in improving the quality of life, and I believe that Girl Up will provide me and all Teen Advisors with a platform to voice our opinions and make a difference.
