Hi everyone! My name is Becca Bean and I’m a senior at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia.
I first heard about Girl Up when I was volunteering as a peer runner at the D.C. Girls On the Run5k. Shortly after that, I started a club at my school, making the past two years jam-packed with exciting activities. Our club has planned movie screenings, book clubs, and volunteer events, all while attending conferences and hosting speakers from organizations including the Sierra Club, Running Start, and the Thirst Project.
I serve as Secretary-General of the Model UN club at my school, and am involved in the National,Spanish, and History Honor Societies. Additionally, I am a captain of the swim team, and enjoy working with our school newspaper, The Chieftain.
One of my passions is youth leadership. This year I am the Co-Chair of the Out of School Time Council, an innovative partnership between organizations that regularly interact with and support young people, such as the YMCA, Extended Day, and the Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth and Families. We are organizing a conference this year centered on the theme “Youth Voice: Lean In and Listen.” I have been lucky enough to take part in two local programs as well: Youth Leadership Greater Washington and Leadership Arlington.
I also love to travel and have new experiences. Last summer I went to Spain on my own to immerse myself in that language and culture, and the summer before that I did the same in China, while teaching English. This summer, I am excited to intern with Running Start, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to involve young women in politics. I will also get to take part in the Young Women’s Political Leadership Program, a week-long experience full of incredible speakers and mentors.
In my spare time you’ll find me tracking my Fitbit steps, looking for new geofilters on Snapchat, playing with my shih tzu-poodle pup, or trying new plant-based foods. I am eager to meet other dedicated Girl Up supporters and get to work as a Teen Advisor!
