Celia Buckman, Co-Chair

Hi! My name’s Celia and I’m a junior at New Trier High School, just outside of Chicago. I’m so excited to be joining Girl Up for another incredible year to co-chair this year’s Teen Advisor class!

This past year, I co-headed my school’s Girl Up club. Together, we hosted a spinning fundraiser, t-shirt sales, a Mothers’ Tea, and much more, raising over $9,000. We also held in-district meetings with Representative Dold about The Girls Count Act, and I now serve on our Representative’s Human Rights Advisory Council.

As the Chicago Coalition Lead, I love to work with passionate activists from all around my area to create clubs, plan events, and get Girl Up’s name out there!

In addition to my work with Girl Up, I’m very involved with UNICEF. I serve as a UNICEF Young Ambassador, and helped to raise over $50,000 this year to eliminate maternal neonatal tetanus. I’m looking forward to leading the UNICEF Club at my school this year.

I love to write, and often combine it with my passion for social issues in my blog for the Huffington Post. I’m also a staff writer for The Mash, a student-led division of The Chicago Tribune. I’m honored to also have had work featured on Glamour, Her Culture, and the UNICEF USA Blog.

Volunteering is one of my favorite things to do. Through clubs at my school, I work with the elderly, disabled students and child refugees from all over the globe. They never fail to inspire and motivate me on a daily basis.

You can also find me doing research for my school’s debate team, blasting Taylor Swift with my friends and on Twitter.
