¡Hola a todos! My name is Desiree Junfijiah- or Des- and I was born and raised in the City of Brotherly Love! I am a rising senior at Bonner & Prendie Catholic Highschool in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.
I found out about Girl Up the summer of my sophomore year but didn’t start it as a club until my junior year. A friend and I are currently co-presidents of our school’s Girl Up Club, and we- as a club- have done a lot this year to spread Girl Up’s message throughout our school. Though faced with Trials and tribulations of starting a new club, the objective has stayed the same.
I can’t gather up the words to describe how excited I am to be serving as a Teen Advisor for Girl Up. The Teen Advisors in the past have done so many amazing things through Girl Up and I can’t wait to do the same! Ever since I can remember I’ve been an active feminist and it’s safe to say that I crawled out the womb proclaiming women’s rights. Being an activist is where I found my voice on topics like Women’s rights, the Black Lives Matter movement, and anything that involves the empowerment of young black women.
There is still much to accomplish- even if I’m 17- and I intend on showing what I’m capable of. I hope to start my own business empowering young girls like myself and many others around the world. It feels great to be a part of something so big and profound and to see a result come out of it. I can’t wait to be a part of Girl Up’s Global movement and give a hand in ensuring a safe access to education for girls in developing countries.
I usually spend my free time on YouTube or scrolling through Pinterest. If I’m not wasting my time on that, I’d be binging Gossip Girl or Stranger Things.
EMPOWERED WOMEN EMPOWER WOMEN- Keep girls educated!!!!
