Hi! My name is Ishana Nigam. I am 16 years old and a junior at Charlotte Country Day School in beautiful Charlotte, North Carolina. I am so excited to be the first Teen Advisor from North Carolina for Girl Up. I’ve always had an interest in helping girls receive the education they need and the rights they deserve. Knowing about this interest, my sister, who is my role model, told me about Girl Up during my freshman year. I started a Girl Up chapter at Charlotte Country Day School during my sophomore year. Girl Up is a perfect fit for me to pursue my passion of helping others who may not be as fortunate as to have a comfortable life and education.
Outside of Girl Up, I love to play tennis. As a school team, we won the state championship this year. I also received an All-State award. More than winning, I enjoyed working as a team and the team spirit that we all had. I recently placed 6th in the NC State Closed Level 1 tournament for Girls 18s.
I am also the founder and co-president of the Speech and Debate Club at CCDS and a member of the National Honor Society.
This summer I had a fun experience participating in a Global Leadership Program in Costa Rica to work with children in poverty-stricken areas. We worked with kids from ages 6 to 16, helping them learn the value of education and healthy living through playing sports.
I love learning new languages! I am currently studying French and Chinese at school and I hope to pursue it further in college. When I’m relaxing at home, I like to watch cooking channels, yet often find myself switching back to Pretty Little Liars. I love to hang out with my friends. An annual highlight I always look forward to is my family ski and snowboarding trip to Colorado.
I can’t wait to work with the Girl Up team this year and meet some new and amazing friends!
