Hello! My name is Julia Sumouske. I’m a 17-year-old senior at Pueblo Centennial High School in beautiful Southern Colorado.
One of my passions has always been philanthropy. For the past six years, I have been a young environmental steward for the nonprofit organization, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, which is dedicated to motivating and enabling people to become active in preserving Colorado’s natural resources.
I recently completed a term of service for Youth Service America. I was selected as the inaugural Colorado Youth Ambassador for National Child Awareness Month and was awarded a youth grant from the Festival of Children Foundation to create a large-scale campaign tackling children’s issues. I served as an effective youth advocate by raising public awareness, fundraising, contacting public officials and local media and creating service-learning projects on combating childhood obesity and promoting healthy lifestyles.
With my ambassadorship, I was able to partner with many organizations including GenerationOn and Starbucks. I collaborated with the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, and hosted the first ever Global Youth Service Day in my community. For that, I was selected by a panel through the YWCA and was awarded the prestigious Anna Taussig 2013 Youth Leader Award at their 12th Annual Tribute to Women Award Dinner. I’m also on the VolunTEEN Nation blogger team!
At my school, I am an active member of my Student Government and serve as the Student Body Secretary. I’m also the Vice President of our Girl’s Cabinet, a community service and girl empowerment club. I also absolutely love to run cross country and belt my heart out in my school’s honors choir, Schola Cantorum.
After reading an article about the Girl Up program in Teen Vogue, I instantly fell in love with the goals of their campaign and knew I had to get involved!
I personally believe that every single human being, no matter your background, age, or abilities, can make a significant change in the world.
As a Teen Advisor, I encourage you to find your voice, take action, spread kindness, and inspire others to do so, as well.
