Hi! I’m Kathy Kong and I’m a senior at Murrieta Valley High School in Murrieta, California. I’m passionate about helping girls in developing countries and excited to serve as a 2016-17 Teen Advisor!
Girl Up first came to my attention through an article written by a past Teen Advisor. After reading about the obstacles girls face in developing countries, I was motivated to create a Girl Up Club at my school. So far we have hosted multiple fundraisers, raised awareness of girls in developing countries, and started a pen pal exchange with the first Girl Up Club in Sierra Leone.
After joining the Girl Up campaign, I realized that Girl Up is not just any organization; it is a community of girls from different backgrounds, cultures, and geographic locations who are united over the single mission to create a better world. I am committed to this mission and can’t wait to inspire change by helping girls reach their highest potential!
Outside of Girl Up, I enjoy finding new music, creating pottery, and watching Parks and Recreation. I am involved in various activities within my community including TEDxTemecula and the Youth Advisory Committee. At my high school, I am part of the business plan team in Virtual Enterprise and have competed on a state and national level. This year I am CEO of Virtual Enterprise and believe fostering entrepreneurship and leadership in girls is of utmost importance.
