Kyung Mi Lee, Co-Chair

Aloha! My name is Kyung Mi, and I am a senior at ‘Iolani School in Honolulu, Hawai’i. I was originally born in Seoul, South Korea, but I moved to Honolulu with my family when I was nine years old.

This past year, I co-led and founded the first Girl Up club in Hawai’i. From hosting community screenings of Girl Rising and He Named Me Malala to meeting our Senators to advocate for girls’ education, we’ve had an amazing experience spreading the mission of Girl Up in our community. Over the years, I’ve developed a passion for gender equality and women’s rights through engaging in and learning about the many obstacles that stand in the way for women and girls around the world.

I believe in the mission of Girl Up because I believe in the “for girls, by girls” movement; I believe in the power of peer-to-peer empowerment and that we are more than capable of making change. I am incredibly honored and excited to be returning as a co-chair this year. Being a Teen Advisor has taught me what it truly means to stand up and to advocate for what I believe in. The most amazing part of being a Girl Up supporter is knowing that there are thousands and thousands of others just like me- speaking up in their communities for a common cause.

I know 2016-2017 is going to be an awesome year, and I look forward to working with all of you!
