Lavanya Singh

Hi! My name is Lavanya Singh and I’m 16 years old! I’m a junior at Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, California. I am honored and excited to be serving as a Girl Up teen advisor and I can’t wait to get started!

I’ve been the founding president of my school’s Girl Up Club for two years, and we’ve done a lot in that time. I organized free public speaking and English camps for more than 1,000 underprivileged girls in India. We also held a teacher panel discussion on sexism in the classroom, organized several fundraisers, hosted a guest speaker from Let Girls Lead, and held monthly discussions on issues that girls face all over the world.

As the leader of the Northern California Coalition, I’ve found some awesome friends in the other Girl Up Clubs in my area, and I’m super excited to continue planning events with them.

I am also a passionate Lincoln-Douglas debater. I’ve championed a national-level tournament, and I have qualified one of the most prestigious tournaments of the season, the Tournament of Champions. The huge gender disparity in high school debate is actually one of the things that inspired my passion for fighting sexism. As part of my effort to reduce this gender gap, I organized and taught at a free debate camp for underprivileged girls in Oakland, California.

I also love to play basketball. I’ve been the assistant coach for my elementary school’s girls basketball team for two years, and I love working with younger girls. We were the champions of our league two years in a row!

I am a huge history nerd, and I’ve been participating in the annual National History Day competition ever since freshman year. I also participate in Model United Nations, and I love public speaking.

In my free time, I’m usually experimenting with various dessert recipes in the kitchen, listening to Taylor Swift, or dreaming about my future cats.
