My name is Leah Adelman. I’m 17 years old and attend Phillips Academy Andover in Massachusetts. I was born in Atlanta, lived in Singapore for three years during middle school and call Hilton Head Island, South Carolina home. I have a passion for the outdoors, competitive cycling, and travel.
Last summer, I biked across America as a Find My Stride fundraiser for Girl Up. It was a 2,756-mile journey from Charleston, SC, to San Diego, CA, that tested me both mentally and physically. It was an incredible experience to cross our great country using only the power of my body. I was thrilled to raise not only awareness for Girl Up, but also more than $5,500 for the campaign to help other girls.
My commitment to empowering girls in developing countries first formed while traveling throughout Southeast Asia. I met girls my age who do not have opportunities to go to school and improve their lives. Those experiences are what led me to become involved in Girl Up.
In addition to my work in the classroom, I am active in extracurricular activities. I am the founder and co-president of our Girl Up Club. Our first year as a club has been a great success. We met our goals of building our membership and raising enough money to purchase five bicycles as part of the SchoolCycle fundraiser. I also lead the Environmental Club and the Jewish Student Union, was selected as a proctor in my dorm, and am a member of the varsity cycling team.
I’m honored and thrilled to continue my work with Girl Up as a Teen Advisor. Never underestimate the power of a girl!
