Hello, my name is Lee Schwartz. I’m from Chevy Chase, Maryland and I am a freshman at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School.
I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with likeminded and powerful girls. I’m involved locally as much as possible, being a part of multiple school clubs like SGU (School Girls Unite) dedicated to raising awareness/money for the education of girls and women in developing countries.
Traveling overseas, I have witnessed the second and third class treatment women and girls face in developing countries. Recently, on a trip to Tanzania I helped build houses, wash clothes, weave baskets and shared in daily chores. Seeing what women and girls have to overcome inspired me to do my part as a Girl Up Teen Advisor.
I also participate in a local organization called GirlsUp (similar name, but different organization), an organization aimed at girls from ages 11-13 in hopes of helping them define who they are before society or anyone else tells them who they have to be. As a three-year teen board member, my team and I conduct community service projects, make presentations to girls in elementary schools, and hold monthly meetings to strategize. Also, the teen board runs a summer camp for girls to participate in various activities to develop their character, confidence and critical thinking through their journey to self-discovery.
I play on a travel soccer team and am working on my average tennis game! I have hobbies like reading and writing (and occasionally baking). I’m working on Spanish fluency, and was delighted to go to an immersion Spanish camp last summer!
I want to be like the many powerful women that have inspired me. The more we lead the more we learn and I can’t wait to see what the teen advisors can accomplish together!
