Hello! My name is Maria Aldana. I am a sophomore at Appleton North High School in northeastern Wisconsin. I’m so excited to be a Girl Up Teen Advisor for 2016-2017.
I first became aware of Girl Up through my school’s involvement with another UNF campaign, Nothing But Nets. I was even more inspired to take action after reading the Girl Up mission. I have had the opportunity to travel throughout the world and have seen firsthand the struggles of young women, especially in developing countries. These opportunities have shaped the person that I am today. I look forward to starting a Girl Up Club at my school and church in the fall.
At my high school, I’m involved with Lightning Buddies. This is a program where students are paired with peers with autism. I’m also involved with Fashion Club, International Club and DECA. In addition, each year I participate in Global Awareness Week at my school. In the past, we’ve raised money for mosquito nets for Africa and scholarships for students to attend secondary school in Nicaragua. This fall I will also serve on the Principal’s Cabinet.
I am also a member of my church’s Global Mission Team. I look forward to incorporating Girl Up projects with my church.
My hobbies include traveling, reading, swimming, shopping, Netflix crime shows and EATING. I’m also an art appreciator and love to view paintings by the Masters.
I can’t wait to meet my fellow Teen Advisors and become further involved as a global citizen!
