Rebecca Ruvalcaba

Hi! My name is Rebecca Ruvalcaba and I am a 16-year-old beginning my junior year at Glen A. Wilson High School in Hacienda Heights, California.

A few things I absolutely love spending time doing include playing soccer, hiking, taking care of my zoo of pets at home, running, filming, and playing video games. I am on my school’s varsity girls’ soccer team and have played soccer since I was a wee-little 1st grader in curly pigtails. My favorite extracurricular, however, is volunteering.

Volunteering and creating change in the world has always been a passion of mine. Right now I am an Ambassador Girl Scout about to break ground on my Gold Award, having already completed my Bronze and Silver Awards. Also, in the Los Angeles region, I serve as a teen reporter and blogger for a non-profit called GlobalGirl Media. I love working behind the camera, which is why this year I have decided I will be a part of the Video Productions group at my school, where I hope to continue combining my love for using the film media to bring attention to issues facing girls both locally and beyond. For the past 2 years, I have served as the co-president of the Glen A. Wilson Girl Up Club on my campus. This past school year we received the Club of the Year Award, the first time a new club and a club led by underclass(wo)men had ever received this honor. My club’s continuous work both on campus and off campus has truly raised awareness about both the hardships and success girls go through across the globe. Most recently, I was honored as New Moon Girls’ Girl of the Year 2014 for my passion and drive to help girls everywhere.

My interest in helping girls around the world was first sparked when my mother told me of how my grandmother was only allowed to receive an education through the 2nd grade in early 20th century Mexico. This story has inspired me to help other girls receive the opportunities and support they need to rise up and take the world head on. Once you give girls the opportunity to be their best and reach their full potential, amazing things will happen.
