Hi everybody! My name is Sawyer Taylor-Arnold and I’m a junior at Asheville High School in North Carolina. I am thrilled and honored to be working with Girl Up and am excited to get to know all of you!
During my freshman year of high school, I heard about Girl Up. Feeling inspired and ready to take on the challenge, I co-founded Asheville Girl Up with a friend before my sophomore year. It has been a crazy year full of movie showings, senator call in’s, and fundraisers.
In addition to my work with Girl Up, I participate in many other activities as well. I am passionate about politics and social justice and one day hope to run for public office myself. I have been on student government for the past two years as class president and am an active member of my school’s speech and debate team. My debate partner and I are currently ranked as the 3rd best debate team (in our event) in the state of North Carolina and the best female debaters! This activity tends to be male dominated so I am honored to have received this title.
I am the youngest board member for the Women’s March on Asheville & Western North Carolina, where I get to meet many incredible women in my community and speak at local events. I love public speaking & advocacy and this role allows me to do both. I also co-founded a small nonprofit with one of my classmates my freshman year of high school. Since it’s creation we’ve raised almost $1,000 with much of the money going to my local rape and abuse shelter.
In my free time, I like to hang out in downtown Asheville with my friends, go hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, or watch ‘The Office’. When I’m not doing any of these things, I love to bake all kinds of desserts. I am excited and honored to be able to do what I love through Girl Up. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do!
