Hey everyone! My name is Sophie Tegenu and I am a senior at Unionville High School in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. My junior year, I started a Girl Up chapter at my school. To say the experience has been rewarding is an understatement! Our chapter has brought like-minded girls and guys together to campaign for a safer and healthier world for girls across the globe.
Along with an online fundraising campaign, Unionville Girl Up has held various bake sales, collaborations with local businesses and a Zumba fundraiser. Our Zumbathon, held in a local park, was our largest and most satisfying fundraiser. The overwhelming enthusiasm we were met with was encouraging and empowering: so many volunteers were dedicated to making the event a success and creating a lasting impact. The fundraiser is sure to become an annual event!
I am also in French Honors Society, National Honors Society and co-Editor in Chief of my school paper. I love writing and the paper has allowed me a platform to express myself and hone my writing skills over the years. As Editor-in-Chief, I am in charge of the content reaching our student body. I have always been fascinated by the power of words, and their ability to ignite thoughtful and productive discussion, and so I strive to create a globally aware paper that excites the student body.
Once a week, I tutor students at the Garage, a local youth center. The Garage is an excellent resource for at-risk youth, and tutoring there has allowed me to form meaningful relationships with the kids and truly see the immense impact a little help can have.
Girl Up has a huge personal connection for me; I am Ethiopian! When I first learned of the organization, I knew I had to be a part of it. I visit Ethiopia every other year, and have seen firsthand the dire need for improvement in the lives of adolescent girls. I am so excited to be a part of the Teen Advisor community and meet the girls who are going to change the world!
