¡Hola! My name is Valeria Colunga and I am 17 years old, I was born and raised in Monterrey, Nuevo León, where I currently serve as Girl Up Monterrey’s Founding President. I am a Mexican girl who likes to contribute on building a feminist future, this includes speaking-out for those who are too afraid to talk and listening to those who are forgotten. I am always debating about something, whether that means discussing local topics, national decisions, or international issues. I love to talk about this subjects at home with my family and at school with my friends because I am always intrigued to see the diversity of opinions.
Besides leading Girl Up Monterrey, one of my favorite hobbies is participating in Model United Nations. I have been selected to serve as the Secretary General of my high school’s MUN on my senior year, therefore I am eager to keep discovering and learning about the various perspectives of the international community in important topics. When I am not reading the news or watching movies, I am probably hearing Latin rhythms music and dancing to it. Being part of the Girl Up community has given me the tools to start a conversation on gender equality that was required, but not properly addressed, in my city’s schools and at home. I will never be grateful enough with Girl Up Monterrey’s Officers for following me in this journey and for agreeing on doing crazy fundraising and awareness ideas. Between my favorite activities that I have done in my club are the organization of the first Girl Up Mexico Regional Summit and our community service project with girls in vulnerable situations.
I am beyond honored to have the privilege of working for Girl Up in my local community and to now serve as your 2018-2019 Teen Advisor. I firmly believe there are many opportunities to make Latin America and the rest of the world a feminist place, and we can do this with your aid. Remember, we can always help a girl up
